The world watched as black smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, signaling that the first vote of the papal conclave has ended without a new pope being elected.
This anticipated moment marks the beginning of the sacred, secretive process in which the College of Cardinals will discern and elect the next successor of St. Peter.
The black smoke is created by burning the ballots with a special chemical mixture (potassium perchlorate, anthracene, and sulfur), ensuring the smoke is unmistakably dark, a practice implemented to prevent confusion seen in previous conclaves. Inside the Sistine Chapel, 133 cardinal electors, all under the age of 80, are prayerfully casting their votes, each seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit to identify the man who will lead the Catholic Church.
Today’s first round of voting is often considered a preliminary ballot, a chance for the cardinals to gauge consensus and identify emerging candidates. Historically, it’s rare for a pope to be chosen in the initial vote, as the cardinals spend time assessing the strengths, pastoral priorities, and spiritual leadership qualities of potential candidates.
The cardinals will continue voting in multiple rounds each day, with two votes in the morning and two in the afternoon. If no candidate achieves the required two-thirds majority, the ballots will again be burned with black smoke. When a cardinal is finally elected and accepts the papacy, white smoke will rise from the chimney, accompanied by the joyous tolling of the bells of St. Peter’s Basilica.
As the world awaits the next signal from the Sistine Chapel, the atmosphere in Rome is charged with anticipation and prayer. Pilgrims have gathered in St. Peter’s Square, eyes fixed on the chimney, as the Church seeks the guidance of the Holy Spirit to elect the next Supreme Pontiff.
