The Vatican announced that Wednesday, May 7th, 2025, will be the official start of the conclave to elect the next Holy Father. Patrick Madrid confirmed the long-awaited news, reminding us that the Church is now entering a sacred and historic moment.
In the days leading up to the conclave, many cardinals—especially from the far corners of the world—are meeting and getting to know one another, often for the first time. These informal conversations are crucial for discernment, as the Church prays for a leader who will carry forward the mission of Christ.
Patrick shared a classic Vatican saying: “He who enters the conclave a favorite comes out a cardinal.” Yet, history gives us exceptions, such as Cardinal Ratzinger, who was widely considered a front-runner and was indeed elected as Pope Benedict XVI.
Human factors—personalities, strengths, and spiritual character—will inevitably play a role. But ultimately, it is the Holy Spirit who guides the process.
