Who Are the Potential Candidates For Pope?

With the Conclave set to begin tomorrow, Morning Air host John Morales welcomed Dr. Robert Moynihan, editor of Inside the Vatican Magazine, to discuss what we can expect as the Church prepares to elect the next Pope.

John Morales emphasized that while there is much speculation about the shortlist for papal candidates, only God knows who the next Pope will be. Dr. Moynihan, who has witnessed every major conclave since Pope John Paul II, noted that these sacred gatherings are marked by prayer, mystery, and a palpable sense of anticipation.

Rome is currently a city of dual emotions: a pilgrimage experience with thousands flocking to St. Peter’s Square, and a solemn, reflective silence as the Sistine Chapel remains locked down in preparation for the voting process. With over 120 electors this time, the number of Cardinals is higher than usual, adding to the intensity and unpredictability of the process.

Before casting their votes, the Cardinals engage in deep, prayerful discussions about the Church’s needs in this critical moment. Dr. Moynihan outlined the key themes:

  • Charisma vs. Structure: Is the Church seeking a bold evangelizer or a solid administrator?
  • Local vs. Global: Will the next Pope be an Italian or another global leader?
  • Evangelizing in a Post-Christian World: How can the Church effectively reach hearts in an increasingly distracted, secular society?

Dr. Moynihan and John Morales concluded with a reminder that the Church needs a leader of deep faith—someone who can resist modern pressures and lead with love and truth. Above all, they urge the faithful to pray for wisdom, unity, and clarity for the Cardinals as they prepare to choose the next successor of Peter.
