Why Did Pope Francis Choose St. Mary Major Basilica as His Final Resting Place?

As all eyes turn to Rome and the upcoming conclave, Timmerie Geagea offered a powerful reminder of the tender Marian devotion that shaped Pope Francis’ life—and ultimately, his death.

Before his passing, Pope Francis made a heartfelt and humble request: to be buried beside the beloved icon of Our Lady, Salus Populi Romani (“Protectress of the Roman People”) in St. Mary Major Basilica, Rome’s oldest Marian church.

He wrote:

“Feeling the sunset of my earthly life is approaching… I have always entrusted my life and priestly ministry to the Mother of Our Lord… I wish that my final earthly journey concludes in this ancient Marian sanctuary.”

For years, Pope Francis made it his tradition to visit this icon before and after every apostolic journey, bringing his joys, burdens, and gratitude to Mary’s feet.

What makes this icon so special is its rich tradition and spiritual depth. It is traditionally attributed to St. Luke, who is believed to have painted it from firsthand knowledge of Mary herself. The image is deeply symbolic: While the Christ child gazes lovingly at her, Mary looks directly at us, as if saying, “Come to me.” Measuring over five feet tall, the icon has been venerated for centuries and is credited with miraculous protection: ending plagues, bringing comfort to the sick, and guiding popes and pilgrims through moments of great need.

Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis was often spotted praying alone in front of this icon, especially before major trips or difficult decisions. Choosing to be buried there was his way of saying: I entrust everything—my ministry, my death, my eternity—to the Mother of God.

When you’re facing something big (or just a tough day), do what Pope Francis did: Go to Mary. Talk to her. Trust her. Because she’s not just Queen of Heaven. She’s your spiritual Mom.
